James Johnson, 7th dan, is the reitred chief instructor of the Burnaby Dojo ; Frank Mostad  is now the chief  karate instructor. Ray Wong was the Shisei-Kai Karate  association’s  technical advisor and examiner. Ray Wong trains occasionally at the South Surrey Karate Club incorporating karate with other styles of mixed martial arts.
Training in martial arts has many advantages: increased achievement in school, flexibility, greater self esteem, and increased awareness in terms of self defense. You do yourself and your child a great service to look into karate training here at a local school.
This is an opportunity to get involved with your son or daughter by coming and training together as many in this club do. You’ll have a reason to be proud of them and they’ll have a reason to be proud of you.

South Surrey Karate Club

Associate instructor at South Surrey is Jim Hawkins, 4th Dan Shotokan. Jim previously ran his own club and was training in Shotokan style of karate before joining South Surrey Karate Club. Sensei Jim is well liked by all the students for being firm but fun.

Black Belts from South Surrey Club include the following: Lucas Reddy Nidan,  Ryan Halladay, David Rhodes, Chris Millard, Cara Statz, Mitch Webb, Adam Reddy, James Anderson and Krystal Millard… all Shodans.

Andrew Statz, a retired school teacher and high school coach of football, volleyball, and track and field is the chief instructor.  Years of judo training with his close friend and confidant Cal Moore under the superb instruction of Nobi Sakiyama and Ron Uyeyama made Andrew skeptical when Calvert appeared at his doorstep one night with an extra dogi and suggested he “try karate“.  The result was over twenty years of “old school” karate training with Tak Samishima as his senior instructor. During that same time period Steve Hiscoe in Chilliwack taught him jujitsu and gave him a real appreciation for those police who train in martial arts.

Today, Sensei Statz’s diverse background in martial art training is passed on to his students and any individual who is “shopping” for a martial arts club is pleasantly surprised at the cross section of training. Parents appreciate the time and effort both Sensei Statz and Sensei Hawkins put into the club.

Karate is a lifelong passion for both instructors. Sensei Statz is a practicing 6th degree black belt who has visited Japan more than once with his karate students and parents from South Surrey Karate Club to compete, train and travel. Sensei Hawkins is a practicing 4th degree.

Karate training has recommenced at Pacific Heights Elementary School. This location is known  or often referred to as a dojo. Pacific Heights Elementary School is located at 17148-26th ave.
All  karate training is held at Pacific Heights School gymnasium which has a beautiful sprung wooden floor for ease of use on growing or ageing knees. Is karate training for you?
